Hour of Code
Middle school students were brought into our tech class to be introduced to computer science. In this event, we were able to teach them a little bit about programming and how to create their own video games.
How did you prepared for this project? Explain.
I was able to prepare for this project by reading our lesson plan the day before our meeting was scheduled. I received an email with a document outlining what we were planned to do. I was excited to see that I would be guiding these girls throughout whichever project they chose to do for their hour of code. How was your experience before, during, and after this project? From beginning to end. Before this project, I was happy to see how the majority of the girls picked the project in which you code your video greeting a friend or family member. During this project, I was being called left and right to help out with coding issues. I am not complaining though. After this project was over, I felt good inside to have known that I was able to make so many girls enjoy encoding their own video. I left this session happy knowing that they learned the basics of coding. What did you learn? How do you better understand working and teaching others? Explain. I learned how the young mind gets itself through misunderstandings. I also learned how to pace myself especially when explaining difficult concepts to those who are younger than I. I improved on my patience when teaching others. I did this through trying to hear the person I am teaching; letting them complete their explanation. What was easy, hard, explain why? I found this session to be neither difficult nor easy. I say this because there were certain aspects of this project that were difficult and some that were easy. An example of this was when Gemma asked me how she would add a logo onto her video. I found myself not knowing how to solve this problem. But after playing around with some code I was able to help Gemma add her santa logo onto her video. An aspect of this project that was easy was when Ava asked me to add a red tint to her video; I found this easy because I had already learned how to do this. How does this project benefits our community? Explain. I believe this project benefits our community because it opens up the eyes of our youth. It does this through allowing them to see the many more options they have career wise. These projects also helps empower girls when they join STEM related fields to feel more than capable to succeed. It expands our community’s potential to grow out of the stereotypes inflicted onto us by those outside of our community. |
